Mary’s song, known as the Magnificat, glorifies God by naming all the ways in which He saves His people. And God’s salvation is a complete reversal of the status quo. The haughty are brought low. The lowly are lifted up. The rich are emptied, and the poor are “filled with good things.” This song reminds us that God’s way is not the way of the world.
Throughout Scripture God chooses simple, humble, broken people to bear His message of salvation to the world. This is precisely why the Gospel of Jesus Christ is good news. It is HIS news. It has nothing to do with who we are or are not, nor with what we have or do not have. The Gospel is about Jesus.
Yet God chooses the humble of heart, people like Mary, and like you and me, to bear His good news to all the world. God lifts us up, so that we can lift our hearts, our hands, and our voices to declare the greatness of our Lord Jesus. And so, with our souls, we too magnify the Lord. We too rejoice in God. For He is our Savior.
